This is the concluding profile in a month-long series spotlighting Black leaders and pathbreakers for whom SA���ʴ�ý ISD schools are named.

This week we spotlight native SA���ʴ�ýite Dr. William Charles Akins – an SA���ʴ�ý ISD pathbreaker with a multitude of firsts, including the first Black principal at a desegregated SA���ʴ�ý high school.

SA���ʴ�ý original: A graduate of SA���ʴ�ý schools (Blackshear, Kealing and The Original L.C. Anderson), Akins earned degrees at what are now Huston-Tillotson University and Prairie View A & M University. He returned to his alma mater Anderson, earning “Teacher of the Year” honors. 

A legacy of firsts: Akins taught at SA���ʴ�ý ISD schools through the era of integration and busing, transferring from Anderson to Johnston High SA���ʴ�ý – now Eastside Memorial High SA���ʴ�ý – where he became the first Black teacher at an integrated SA���ʴ�ý high school. 

• Akins served for nine years as SA���ʴ�ý ISD’s first Black principal at the new Anderson High SA���ʴ�ý, in the wake of integration and court-mandated busing. 

Media Trailblazer: Akins officiated at UIL football and other athletic events, and became the first local Black television sportscaster on what is now KLRU-TV. 

• Akins’ Legacy: In 1982, Huston-Tillotson conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters on Akins. In 1998, the SA���ʴ�ý ISD Trustees named the district’s new high school for Akins in recognition of his legacy and lasting impact.

• El legado de Akins: En 1982, Huston-Tillotson le confirió a Akins un doctorado honorífico en Letras Humanitarias. En 1998, los miembros de la mesa directiva del SA���ʴ�ý ISD le dieron a la nueva escuela preparatoria del distrito el nombre de Akins en reconocimiento de su legado y duradero impacto.
